REFUGEE

CITIZENSHIP

The rules of citizenship are designed to make sure that all people recognized as citizens and granted citizenship are treated equally. A person is not a citizen of Canada merely because he has lived in Canada for an extended period of time. Unless you were born in or outside of Canada to at least one Canadian parent you must apply to obtain Canadian citizenship. Citizenship can be revoked or denied for a person with dual citizenship or a Canadian permanent resident under certain circumstances. Amendment to the citizenship act however, allowed for citizenship to be granted or restored retroactively to most but not all cases.
